Domino's started out small, with just one Pizza Restaurant in 1960. Over the years we have grown to 200 restaurants in 1978, 1,000 in 1983, 5,000 in 1989 and now have more than 9,000 pizza restaurants, including more than 5,000 internationally. It's a trip that took 45 years, but it was worth it!
Back when we started out in 1960, Domino's was actually named DomiNick's. Brothers Tom and James Monaghan bought the Ypsilanti, Michigan pizza restaurant for $500. It wasn't until 1965 that Tom renamed the restaurant "Domino's Pizza, Inc.".
After the 1965 renaming, franchise pizza restaurants began to open up, one in 1967 and another in 1968. Over the next 10 years, Domino's opened 200 more restaurants. Our growth really took off after that, with Domino's becoming the fastest growing pizza restaurant in the United States in 1985. Just 11 years later in 1996, we launched this website. Since then, we have continued to launch new restaurants while innovating online and off.
In 2008 Domino's Pizza became the largest sandwich delivery restaurant overnight when we launched our line of toasty, oven baked sandwiches. In 2009 we added Penne Pasta and Chocolate Lava Crunch Cakes for dessert. In 2010, Domino's rolled out entirely new pizza recipes, including new sauce, crust and cheese. In 2011 Domino's continued to revamp the menu launching a new recipe for Wings and Boneless Chicken and added two new bread sides, Stuffed Cheesy Bread and Parmesan Bread Bites. Also, to stay true to our pizza restaurant roots, we expanded the pizza menu with a line of Domino's Artisan Pizzas™ using premium ingredients.
